World Cup 2018: Arsene Wenger Reveals Why Mesut Ozil Struggled In Russia

Arsene Wenger has revealed why midfielder Mesut Ozil struggled at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Ozil has been the face of criticism after Germany were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup in the group stage.

Ozil was dropped for the only game the game won - the 2-1 comeback against Sweden and failed to beat Mexico and South Korea.

His dad has even suggested he should retire from international football.

Now, Wenger thinks Ozil's performances were the result of the pressure and criticism he faced before the tournament.

The Frenchman, speaking to beIN SPORTS, said: "I know Ozil well, he's an exceptional football player.

"Him and Gundogan suffered with what happened before the World Cup because they have been vindicated in Germany.

"Ozil is a guy who needs support, he doesn't need controversy.

"When I watched him play, I could feel there were situations in the game where he could have moved forward, progressed and played more vertical. He played security.

"I was thinking come on, that is not the real Ozil I know, the guy who can kill.

"He played alright, but he didn't play with complete freedom and played with the handbrake on this World Cup.

"Gundogan didn't even play at all and he's a great player."

29-year-old Ozil is currently on holiday before returning to London for pre-season when he will meet new manager Unai Emery.
