OMG! Manchester United Ready To Pay £72m For Atletico Madrid Defender (Details)

Manchester United are reportedly still interested in signing defender Lucas Hernandez even after Atletico Madrid increased his release clause.

United were keen to sign defenders during the summer as Jose Mourinho looked to battle Manchester City for the Premier League.

Signing a left-back was once of the major priorities as first choice player Ashley Young nears the end of his football career.

United failed to get a deal over the line Amid reports Mourinho was more interested in Juventus defender Alex Sandro.

It now emerged that the Red Devils had eyes on Hernandez - a player also wanted by Real Madrid.

According to France Football, Atletico decided to tie Hernandez down with a new contract amid transfer interest.

Real Madrid are said to be watching the 22-year-old and could be the perfect replacement for Marcelo when he Retires.

Hernandez is now earning £7.7m (€8.5m)a season at Atletico, with his release clause increased from £49.5m (€55m) to£72m (€80m).

That price tag apparently did nothing to perturb United or Real, with the Spanish giants ready to snap him up just before the transfer window closed.

Real Madrid missed out on a deal at the time but could return for Hernandez with Marcelo entering the final years of his career.

Hernandez, who’s brother Theo is on Real’s books, could also provide an alternative to Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane at centre-back.

Like Bernabeu boss Julen Lopetegui, president Florentino Perez is a fan of Hernandez.

But Atletico are said to be planning to secure the defender’s services for the long-term, just as they did with Saul Niguez.

Hernandez would supposedly be willing to commit himself to Atletico until 2025 if he got a hefty pay rise.

Atletico, meanwhile, would protect their asset by including a mega £135m (€150m) release clause in the terms of his contract.
