World Cup 2018: Barcelona Send Lionel Messi Message After Croatia Defeat

Lionel Messi suffered humiliation with Argentina on the brink of elimination and his club Barcelona could have just made things worse.

Argentina were beaten 3-0 by Croatia courtesy of goals from Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.

Rebic scored a cheap goal when Goalkeeper Wily Caballero chipped an attempted pass straight to him, with Modric scoring a beauty from outside the box and Rakitic scoring a third late on.

Messi, who had his penalty saved in the 1-1 draw with Iceland, was below his rated performance and saw Rakitic block his only real opportunity across the 90 minutes.

And Messi's club Barcelona have sent a message to him and Ivan Rakitic after the final whistle.

They congratulated Rakitic on the victory and moved to send a "strong message" with an emoji 💪.

But it is unlikely to be appreciated by Messi who faces an early elimination from the tournament in Russia.

Rival, Ronaldo has inspired Portugal to four points and are close to reaching the last 16, with four goals.

While Messi's biggest contribution so far has been his penalty miss against Iceland.

He was anonymous last night as Argentina failed to score against Croatia and could consider international retirement.

Argentina defender Pablo Zabaleta has revealed he can't remember a performance from Argentina like this for a long time and was surprised by Messi's lack of impact in the second half.

“No, no no I can’t remember to be honest, a performance like that, I can’t remember in a long time,” he said.

“We can talk about the Caballero mistake that probably cost that game, but it was not only that mistake.

"I think the team looks very poor.

“We haven’t seen probably a shot from Messi in the second half. You’ve never heard that many times.

“He took (Sergio) Aguero off, why can’t they play (Gonzalo) Higuain and Aguero both.

“If I’m a Croatian defender and have to play against Aguero and Higuain, I would be more worried about it.”
